Bad Credit? Build Good Credit Habits
Your credit can be one of the most important things in some life changing decisions. Know how to fix that bad credit, build good credit and keep it that way.
There are a few things that you can do to build your credit score up. The main thing you need to do is train yourself to have good credit habits. This article will help you achieve that goal.
Start out with small charges on a credit card that you pay in full. This looks good on your revolving credit. It also keeps you from getting into trouble. Subscriptions to things like magazines are a good way to do that. They’re usually $10 or so per month. It’s easy to cover and it’s a constant good mark on your report. A smart habit to get into is only spending around 30% of your limit.
Another great habit is staying aware of your finances. You can view your monthly statements online. You can enroll in plans that alert you when odd charges appear on your credit card. Another part of staying aware is using the money wisely in the first place. If you put money aside each month to pay down your balance, make sure it goes to the balance. Those new shoes are not more important.
Don’t have too many cards. This destroys your income / debt ratio. It also sets you up for failure if something happens like losing your job or hospital bills. A good rule of thumb is one or two cards, max. Get rid of the extras. Keep the oldest ones and the ones with the best rate.
Also, it is a great idea to get on the Do Not Call List. That also applies to credit card offers and other solicitations. It will greatly reduce junk mail and temptation. If you aren’t being inundated with offers, it will be easier to stay on the straight and narrow.
Finally, if you know something is coming up and you’ll be out of work or low on cash, communicate with your creditors. If you come to them first with your problems, you’ll be surprised how much they’ll work with you to fix the problem. They’ll lower your rate or suspend payments for a couple months.
