Help with Choosing a Frequent Flyer Credit Card

Each and every frequent flyer points credit card offers unique features and benefits. However, some will be better suited for you than others. Here are several details to consider as you compare frequent flyer credit card offers.

  • How many points will you earn for each dollar you spend? – The earn rate, or the number of points rewarded per dollar spent, is by far one of the most important details of any frequent flyer credit card. This will give you a better idea of how often you will earn points as well as how long it will take to get enough for a free ticket.
  • Fees – There are many fees to be aware of when applying for a frequent flyer credit card. Will you be charged an annual fee? Do you have to pay a membership fee, or will it be waived?
  • Terms and conditions are different – Unfortunately, it is common for the points earned on some frequent flyer credit cards to expire after a certain period of time. You need to be aware of this to ensure that you use your points before they are gone forever. Other cards reward points in tiers, gradually reducing as you spend. Watch out for these as it can really make a big difference.

Pros

  • Points per dollar spent – No matter if you are shopping at home or internationally, when you spend money on your frequent flyer credit card you are going to receive points that can later be redeemed for free tickets. Do check the fine print before applying as some cards apply limitations on what purchases qualify for rewards points.
  • More than just points – Although the main benefit of a frequent flyer points card is the points you can earn, there are other advantages that you should be aware of. Did you know that some of these cards have very competitive balance transfers and low interest rates? Don’t get so caught up in the rewards points that you overlook the other benefits.
    • Complimentary insurance* – Given that many of these cards are gold or platinum level, they frequently come with complimentary overseas and/or domestic travel insurance. Some go further and include complimentary insurance for travel accidents, flight inconvenience (delays and cancellations), lost luggage, purchase protection, and more.

Cons

  • Difficulty determining points and rewards – This has been an issue with frequent flyer credit cards for many years and still continues to plague consumers from time to time. Do your best to learn the ins and outs of a card before applying, including how you earn points and how many you need to redeem for something you want, like a free flight or an upgrade.
  • Expiry and tiering of points – It’s worth checking the fine print for details on whether the card’s earn rate, e.g. 1 point per dollar, stays the same regardless of how much you spend per month. Ideally you want a card that does not cap or tier the number of points you can earn. Nor do you want a card with an expiration date on points. Instead, look for a card that has no expiration date on the points you’ve earned so that you can save them up for a better reward.
